Hello! It's me, Melissa Q. from a happy stitch back with another wardrobe essential....leggings!! In my attempts to create a handmade wardrobe I've struggled to find a good leggings pattern so it was with great delight that I discovered the Sloan Leggings. And, even more delightful is the fact that Sloan leggings are a Hey June pattern. Adrianna from Hey June seems to have cornered the market on beautiful, modern wardrobe essentials. The Sloan leggings are no different.
These buggers fit me beautifully! I have naturally large hips so I wasn't surprised I sized into the Large. The fit is pretty close to perfect, though I might try them in a Medium as well because the waist area is a bit big. I plan on making a lot of these, I basically live in leggings and love that now I can sew them in fun fabrics such as (ahem) yellow stripes!
At first I thought the pattern was a little nuts, there are notches near the knee and they seemed like low-risers at the top. But, the knee notches actually give the legs a great shape and the thick waistband brings the pants up to waist level. Speaking of the waist, there is a secret pocket embedded in the waistband and it is sheer genius. Perfect for tucking your yoga card and a bit of cash so you can travel hands-free to the studio.
Another thing about the waist, as you can see the leggings do not have an elastic waistband. Instead, the waistband is a wide, two sided band that really holds them up securely but without creating a stomach roll. Bonus!
I should also add that the pattern also includes an adaptation for making very workout-friendly leggings that curve around the tush for greater movement as well as different lengths. I'm excited to make and try out a pair of those. As for this pair of crazy striped leggings, my plan is to make myself a set of wings and a bobbly headband and go as a bee this Halloween. My kids are still small enough that I don't think it will be embarrassing if mom is dressed up!
