You can see my Folk Art Embellished version of the Katie Bird Pillow on my previous post here. For that version, I enlarged the pattern 200% to make a pillow for the couch. Now, with the holidays approaching, it seemed to me that this pattern would make the perfect dove. For this version I reduced the pattern 50%. The finished doves measure 7 1/2" from beak to tail. With this smaller size and gift giving season upon us, an assembly line worked well. I made nine doves using a combination of plush, velveteen, felted wool and heavy woven cotton.
I followed the basic instructions, omitting the interfacing, and made the basic bodies without the wings or eyes:
After assembling the bodies, I embroidered the eyes and added wool felt beaks:
For the wings, I used the pattern to cut the wings out of felt wool and felt. I attached them to the body with a button on each side:
Every dove needs an olive branch, of course. Here, I cut leaves and a stem from wool felt and sewed them to either side of the beak:
The Katie Bird Dove version is perfect for holiday gifts and decorations, or for any time of year. If you want to make a hanging ornament, just add a ribbon loop in the center back seam, or sew a loop on after assembly. You may also want to reduce the pattern even more than 50%. What can you do with the Katie Bird Pillow pattern? We can't wait to see!
