Meet The Designer: Brooke of Silly Mama Quilts

This week we are meeting Brooke Sellmann, the designer behind Silly Mama Quilts. Brooke started her journey as a quilter right after a striking event on her life. She now designs projects for a couple of prominent fabric brands, and she describes her designs as fresh and fun. Keep reading to know more about Brooke and her work as a pattern designer!

Why do you sew?

I have been sewing and quilting for a very long time! I love the creative process. Playing with new fabric lines and creating handmade items for family and customers to enjoy.

Why do you sew?

I have been sewing and quilting for a very long time!  I love the creative process.  Playing with new fabric lines and creating handmade items for family and customers to enjoy.

When did you started to sew? And what was your first make?

I have been sewing since I was very young.  I used to make a lot of clothes.

When did you start to draft patterns? How was the learning process?

In 2010, I was part of a design team for Amanda Herring.  As a group we each would design projects to be featured on her blog.  For Spring Market 2012, we each designed a project that was published in her book.  I actually began writing patterns after doing a number of projects for Melissa Ybarra's Sunshine Serenade fabric line.  Each time I write a pattern, I find there is more to learn.

How is your creative/design process?

My creative and design process really depends on the project.  Many times I have the freedom to create whatever I would like and that is my favorite.  There are other times when I have certain restrictions to design within.  The fabric I am working with provides a lot of inspiration too.

How/where do you see yourself and your business in the future?

"I enjoy creating one of a kind home decor. I hope that the patterns I have written will inspire others to enjoy making home decor projects that are doable.

What sewing machine do you own? Is it the machine of your dreams?

I have an older Bernina.  It has been a great machine.  I would love a newer model, but am thankful for this one.

What is your favorite make ever? Why?

Right now, I would say my favorite make is the Marcelle Medallion quilt my friend Sally and I did as a quilt along on our blogs several summers ago.  I used as a basis, a fabric line of bright and happy colors.  This quilt is on my bed each day and brings a smile to my face!

What is on in the background while you're sewing?

Sometimes I am listening to podcasts, but much of the time I enjoy the quiet because my house is nosy when my family is home.

Which is(are) your favorite pattern(s)?

A favorite pattern for a long time was Yellow Brick Road by Terry Akinson.  Now I rarely use patterns unless a customer asks me too.

Who's your sewing/blogging/style/fashion/designer/quilter hero(s)?

I love Alison Glass, Amanda Herring, Carrie Bloomston come to mind first.
