Meet The Designer: Kaysie of KZJO'STUDIO

Meet...Kaysie, the designer behind KZJO'Studio! Kaysie has a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts with a major in Fashion Design, from the Art Institute of California - San Francisco. She now lives in her hometown in Idaho, and there's where she started her pattern line. Kaysie's love of design, fashion and sewing combines into pattern drafting. Her goal for KZJO'Studio patterns is for home sewists to make "clothes you'll love to make and wear!".

Why do you sew?

I sew because I want to create the things that I imagine in my mind. I love the tactile feel of transforming fabric into a finished product.

When did you started to sew? And what was your first make?

I started sewing when I decided to go to fashion design school. I was 18. My first official makes were two swimsuits that I draped and drafted with the help of one of my instructors. They also ended up in my first fashion show, just a few months into my fashion program.

When did you start to draft patterns? How was the learning process?

I started drafting patterns in school and learned both flat pattern making and draping. The learning process was very technical.

How is your creative/design process?

It usually starts by sketching, which is my favorite part of the design process.

What sewing machine do you own? Is it the machine of your dreams?

Viking Topaz 30 & a Viking Platinum 770 along with a Bernette Cover and Stitch machine and Simplicity serger.

What is your favorite make ever? Why?

My senior project: a wedding gown. It has 30 yards of silk organza at the bottom along with double faced satin and is lined. I also added strings of pearls along the back. It was a labor of love! Especially when adding a narrow rolled hem along the bottom of all 30 yards in one continuous piece, it took a lot of patience.

What is on in the background while you're sewing?

Murder, She Wrote, Golden Girls, or the Real Housewives. I am obsessed :)

What are your favorite sewing techniques?

French seams and bias binding (knit or woven)

What is your least favorite sewing technique/step?

Sewing buttons, snaps, etc.

Describe yourself in 3 words: Creative, meticulous, headstrong.
