Meet the Designer: Marisa of Laela Jeyne Patterns

This week, meet Marisa of Laela Jeyne Patterns! Marisa is a mom of two girls who started drafting patterns in 2014. She aims to make patterns that will allow you to create well-fitting, practical, yet stylish pieces that be a go-to in yours and your family's closet. Keep reading to know more!

Why do you sew?

It's so therapeutic to me! I love to have well-fitting clothes for myself and my family and be able to create them myself .

When did you started to sew? And what was your first make?

I started sewing in middle school and I made myself a dress from a Simplicity paper pattern. It was a dark red, slightly stretchy, wrap dress.

When did you start to draft patterns? How was the learning process?

I started drafting pdf patterns in the fall of 2014 and I was able to quickly pick up the process since I was used to drafting on paper.

How is your creative/design process?

It's a little all over the place! I get inspired, think a lot about the design I want, draft and test it myself, then get it prepared for testing. There could be weeks between those steps since I have lots of other things on my to-do list.

How/where do you see yourself and your business in the future?

I hope to continue to design and release patterns for the foreseeable future but I also have a long term dream of opening a small brick and mortar fabric store when I could sell custom fabric, designer fabrics, paper patterns, and teach classes, etc.

What sewing machine do you own? Is it the machine of your dreams?

I have a Brother CS6000i for the main machine. I'd like to have a Bernina some day but the Brother works so well for me, I don't see a reason to switch yet!

What is your favorite make ever? Why?

That's a tough one! I'm not sure that I could pick because I'm such a perfectionist, I find small little issues on all of make makes. I really love a pair of plain black leggings I made from my Taylor Leggings pattern, though!

What is on in the background while you're sewing?

Usually an audiobook or some sort of streaming service tuned to a show I'm binging.

Which is(are) your favorite pattern(s)?

I like my plain t-shirt and leggings pattern. I keep making them over and over again because they're so comfortable. I also really like Swoon Patterns scarf neck sweater pattern. Very cute for fall with the perfect sweater knit!

Who's your sewing/blogging/style/fashion/designer/quilter hero(s)?

I'm really into Beverly, the Fairy Godmother of Bras right now. Her classes are amazing and she's got so much knowledge!

What are your favorite sewing techniques?

I'd have to say hemming with my coverstitch... It's so professional and easy even though I always put it off!

What is your least favorite sewing technique/step?

 Hemming! Haha
