Meet the Designer: Mariska of DIY Fluffies

This week meet...Mariska of DIY Fluffies! Mariska lives in Amesterdam, The Netherlands, with her husband and two boys. She started to make toy patterns in 2008 and gets the inspiration for her toy patterns from her kids, who love animals. Her patterns are amazingly cute and very popular! Keep reading to know more.

Why do you sew?

 To create plush toys.

When did you started to sew? And what was your first make?

When I was 29 I bought my first sewing machine, the first thing I made was a starfish plushie.

When did you start to draft patterns? How was the learning process?

When I made a difficult toy (a dragon) I decided to turn it into a pattern, because I knew I couldn't make them myself to sell, it would take to much time. It took a few weeks to get the pattern right. Because I love the japanese sewing books, I decided to make the pattern in the same style. You don't even have to read japanese to understand the tutorials in those books. That why I decided to make my patterns with many illustrations to just like the tutorials in these books.

How is your creative/design process?

I have a sketchbook which I take everywhere. When I have designed something that I like, I start making the plush toy from it. When it is done I make the pattern by scanning it in and I create the pattern and tutorial on my computer. When my patterns are done, they are tested by several people. My first language is dutch not english, so that needs to be checked to.

How/where do you see yourself and your business in the future?

More patterns and pattern books would be great. I love my job! I'm also making amigurumi crochet patterns now, which I'm currently working on a lot.

What sewing machine do you own? Is it the machine of your dreams?

I have a pfaff, which is really nice to work with. But honestly I see them just as a tool, I think other would probably work to. As long as it has a slow sewing option on it :)

What is your favorite make ever? Why?

That is a hard question, I think my whale is. I love it's round and cute shape.

Which is(are) your favorite pattern(s)?

Well since I'm making my own patterns, I never made any plushes from other designers. My favorite pattern of my own collection is the whale and Yoki the fat dragon.

Who's your sewing/blogging/style/fashion/designer/quilter hero(s)?

I love japanese characters, like molang, totoro etc. My sewing room is full of japanese characters.

What are your favorite sewing techniques?

uhm, I don't think I use many techniques when sewing plushies.

What is your least favorite sewing technique/step?

Sewing by hand, takes so much time.
