Tessellated Leaves is a maple leaf tessellation, inspired by M.C. Escher’s famous tessellations. A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps. Another way to think about a tessellation is to consider each block a tile in a repeating series.

The pattern contains detailed instructions for creating your choice of a two-color or four-color pieced quilt top in 5 different sizes: baby, lap, twin, full, or queen. It also has an explanation for how to adapt the pattern to create a color-wash effect. The pattern has side-by-side steps and illustrations, and includes an easy half-square triangle (HST) method.

The Tessellated Leaves pattern utilizes half-square triangles (HSTs) and careful piecing to create a 12-inch square finished block. The smallest pieces used in the pattern are 2 ½-inch squares.
